Its main objective is to increase user’s motivation, experience and engagement. For the same reason, it has started to penetrate in e-learning systems. However, when using gamified design elements in e-learning, we must consider various types of learners. In the phases of analysis and design of such elements, the cooperation of education, technology, pedagogy, design and finance experts is required. This paper discusses the development phases of introducing gamification into e-learning systems, various gamification design elements and their suitability for usage in e-learning systems. Several gamified design elements are found suited for e-learning (including points, badges, trophies, customization, leader boards, levels, progress tracking, challenges, feedback, social engagement loops and the freedom to fail). Advices for the usage of each of those elements in e-learning systems are also provided in this study. Based on those advises and the identified phases of introducing gamification info e-learning systems, we conducted an experimental study to investigate the effectiveness of gamification of an informatics online course. Results showed that students enrolled in the gamified version of the online module achieved greater learning success. Positive results encourage us to investigate the gamification of online learning content for other topics and courses. We also encourage more research on the influence of specific gamified design elements on learner’s motivation and engagement.

Investigating the Relationship between Player Types and Learning Styles in Gamification Design
An educational gamification is a new approach that has developed hopes to increase the effectiveness of learning. Computer game users are actually players that are categorized according to their personalities and have different learning styles. To achieve maximum performance in designing gamified learning, one can determine the relationship between player types and their learning styles, and th...
متن کاملTowards an Ontology for Gamifying Collaborative Learning Scenarios
Gamification is an interesting and relatively new concept. The concept of Gamification is more than just game playing; it is about introducing game design elements in a proper way to satisfy individual motivational needs according to personality traits. Researcher and Educators are currently looking at Gamification to deal with the problem of learner engagement and motivation in Collaborative L...
متن کاملUnderstanding Student Perceptions of Game Elements to Develop Gamified Systems for Learning
As a precursor to the development of a gamified system to improve learning outcomes, we investigate the perception of important stakeholders, namely learners, on gamification in learning. However, as gamification is a relatively new approach/term, we neither assume that learners are knowledgeable about it nor do we attempt to explain the term in detail to them. Instead, we focus on common eleme...
متن کاملA Validated Framework for Gamified Electronic Teaching of English Language with a Systemic Approach to Instructional Design
One way of making learning English language interesting is through its gamified instruction, especially nowadays that most teachings are done virtually. Doing so, however, requires a valid framework. To construct such a framework a set of 22 peer reviewed papers on language learning and gamified teaching, from among 94 of such papers, was content analyzed and key concepts, and frequently used e...
متن کاملResearch Note - Gamification of Technology-Mediated Training: Not All Competitions Are the Same
Gamification, an application of game design elements to non-gaming contexts, is proposed as a way to add engagement in technology-mediated training programs. But there is hardly any information on how to adapt game design elements to improve learning outcomes and promote learner engagement. To address the issue, we focus on a popular game design element, competition, and specifically examine th...
